Grassroots to Growth

Creating Sustainable Communities for a Better Future

Following the questionnaire answered by our students, we concluded, among other things that they feel that more collaborative, task-based projects are needed, as well as a better and more detailed approach of the 17 SDGs. As a result, we decided to start such a project with a group of 14 students coming from various classes, using the SCRUM method in order to manage and develop our project, which is still ongoing.

Therefore, the main activity is the realization of projects with the students using the AGILE/SCRUM method. The projects have as their theme the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provided for in the 2030 Agenda of the UN.

The main benefits for students will be:

• Responsibility and adaptability;

• Critical thinking and systemic thinking;

• Working in a collaborative way

• Analysing, accessing, managing, integrating, evaluating, and creating information in various forms and environments;

• Improving digital skills;

• Development of communication skills in English.

• Demonstrating teamwork and leadership skills; adapting to various roles and responsibilities; productive collaboration with others; empathic behavior; respecting other points of view;

• Familiarizing the student with KANBAN-type platforms for project management;

• Improving students’ skills in using computer technologies.

As it was concluded that the SDGs are quite rarely the subject of the standard materials and curriculum, we decided upon organizing and extra-curricular project involving this group of students and weekly meetings in order to familiarize them with the SDGs through various activities, such as discussions, individual and group work on collecting data about power consumption, ways to reduce power consumption, ways to improve our communities as well as how to lead a healthier life, to name but a few.

Once this spearheading group of 14 students will understand the importance of knowing what the Sustainable Development Goals refer to, as well as be able to present information about them, they will start working on producing several informational materials, material that will be both posted inside the school and on a site, as well as presented and used within various classes to further raise the awareness of the other students about such topics as responsible consumption of energy, protection of the environment, living a healthier and more prosperous life in harmony with Earth.
